The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
