Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
